Smiles - SOS no.77

Nothing shakes the smiling heart.

[Santosh Kalwar]

I can think of so many people, places, and things that make me smile - my husband, my children, my dog, my students, my classroom. But, I landed on the hour and half I get to host a writing group via Zoom on Sundays.
I can't help but smile each time the bell rings letting me know that someone has chosen to spend this precious time with me.

The Kind of _____ Who... SOS no. 76

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.
[Helen Keller]

Statements such as this make me pause and reflect. Reflection is a great tool for evaluating one's goal and/or progress toward said goals. Reflection is also great for allowing one to see/determine areas of strength, or celebration, as well as areas that need refinement. I am grateful for this opportunity to reflect on the kind of _____ that I have been, I am, and I strive to be.

________________________________________________

I have been the kind of teacher who had to be in complete control, often to the detriment of my relationship with my students. I am, and strive to be, the kind of teacher who gradually releases control and the responsibility of learning to my students. I want to build the kind of relationship with my students  that communicates love, confidence, and trust.

I have been the kind of teacher who believed, "I taught it. They should have learned it." I am, and strive to be, the kind of teacher who revisits a concept/skill as many as needed until it is learned. I want to build a classroom culture with my students that communicates, "one and done is not acceptable", and "practice makes a learner".

I have been the kind of teacher who wasn't a writer, but who tried to teach writing well. I am, and strive to be, the kind of teacher who writes, writes well, reads about writing, and studies how to teach writing well. I want to build a writing habit that will put me in a position to model for my students ALL THE THINGS it means to be a writer.

I have been the kind of teacher who only read aloud to her students when it was in the lesson plans. I am, and strive to be, the kind of teacher who reads aloud to her students as often as she can. I want my students to see themselves in the books I read which drives my desire to diversify my classroom library.

I have been the kind of person who only read for fun during the summer months. I am, and strive to be, the kind of person who reads diverse genres all year long. I want to build my own reading muscle and share my love of reading with my students, hoping they will develop their own love of reading.

I could go on and on writing about the kind of _____ who I have been, am, and strive to be. I probably will continue to think about it. But, the words will likely end up in my notebook rather than on this blog.

Quiet - SOS no. 75

The quieter you become the more you are able to hear.

[Rumi]

As I showed up to the notebook this morning, I realized that I needed to QUIET the negativity that often clouds my mind due to some of the struggles associated with teaching right now. Please know, I absolutely love teaching and I love my students more, but the struggle is still very real.

So, I pushed myself to find some positives from my week, and I am happy to report that I was successful.

1. Three different colleagues mentioned to me and/or others something positive I bring to my campus. This is my first year at this campus.

2. I got a new student Thursday...1 more life to impact.

3. Ms. L excitedly tells me she good morning and loves me everyday.

4. I have the privilege to pray with an amazing prayer warrior daily.

5. I was gifted time and lunch.

6. I am excited about the Adobe Spark writing projects my students are completing next week.

Time to Write - SOL 22

______________________________________________________________________

I am sitting in front of my computer screen with 10 other writers who are also sitting in front of their computer screens, and I am so tired and so hungry, I can  barely generate something (that I perceive as meaningful) to write about.

I write with some or all these people, as well as others who are not present tonight, at least 2-3 days per week. This time and space is sacred for many of us. It is a time and space designated for writing; for writing whatever one has deemed necessary to be written. Our writing includes picture books, novels, novellas, or scripts; poems, notebook pages, anytime pages, and even a Slice of Life (hint-hint).

In this time and space, we sit together (yet apart) in community; silently supporting and encouraging one another's efforts to generate, revise, edit, and publish (although not necessarily in this linear manner).

Today, I almost allowed my emotions and being physically spent from the demands of my work time and space keep me from being present. But, in this sacred writing time and space, in front of these people, in front of our screens, I'm able to muster up just enough energy and brainpower to put my own words on the page.

Snow - SOS no. 74

We don't normally get much snow where I live in Texas. But, as you can see from this picture I took when I got up this morning, we got some. Not much, but for Texas, this is a lot.

What you may not be able to tell from this picture is that there is a solid sheet of ice underneath that white stuff.

It rained most of the night and as the temperatures dropped, we a lot sleet into the early morning hours. Snow began to fall after sunrise this morning.

If you follow Texas news or you live in or near Texas, you know that last year around this time, we experienced a massive snow storm that left millions without power and water, and here was a huge pile up on one of our interstates caused by black ice and limited visibility.

This year's storm has been significantly more mild. There have been some minor accidents, but far fewer power outages. Almost all of the school districts in this area cancelled school for Thursday and Friday in preparation of the coming storm. As an educator, I am grateful for the extra days off the snow has brung. I can't, however, stop thinking about my students and their families. I pray they are safe, warm, and well-prepared for our current conditions.

Fortunately, this weather will not last long here in our parts. By next week, we will see temperatures in the 50s or higher, and we probably won't even remember much about the snow and ice that us mostly shut in for a few days.

Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments, embark upon a sentimental journey, and enjoy every idle hour.
